Bits of Randomness: Smellivision Edition

Is there an app for that?: The time for us to go on our summer vacation will be here soon and the more I’ve been thinking about it, the more I’m dreading a 12 hour drive in the suburban assault vehicle with our 13 month old. We haven’t been on a long road trip since he was about a month and a half old and it took us about six hours to do a four hour drive due to all the stops for diaper changes and feedings. This time around he won’t be nursing and my wife can sit with him and offer him snacks and finger foods, but he isn’t fond of being still. Watching this kid can wear me out at times, so, it ought to be interesting. We’re breaking the drive up into two parts and we are leaving in the late afternoon with the hope that he’ll sleep most of the way. That may be a bit optimistic, but I’m sticking to it.

Nice job, dumbass: Recently I was reading an excerpt of Michael Lewis’ new book ‘Home Game: An Accidental Guide to Fatherhood’ and was more than disappointed by a tome depicting the dad as an inept dumbass. It’s bad enough TV shows and commercials depict us as hapless and worthless, now we have one of our own perpetuating the stereotype. For those of you that don’t know Lewis, he is the author of ‘Liar’s Poker’, which is actually a great book detailing life on Wall Street during the ’80s, and ‘Moneyball’, which details the analytical approach Oakland Athletics GM Billy Beane uses in building a baseball team. Ordinarily I really like his work, but this time it looks like I will be skipping his latest effort.

Cheerios – the great silencer: Now that little man is more active he is making our time at church much more interesting. On the verge of walking, he wants no part of sitting with either my wife or me or being occupied by books or toys. The only thing that seems to work is a constant stream of snacks delivered as soon as service starts. This week I was in a near panic as I ran out of yogurt melts even before the sermon only to remember that we had packed a second cup with Cheerios. After services we received many compliments on how well behaved he was in church. To which I sheepishly replied: “That’s because we feed him the whole time.”

Does Whrrl have smellivision?: On Sunday I was back in the kitchen making some food for little man. I have been a bit slack in making his food while he has been teething, but now that the first phase seems to have passed I’m back at it. I decided to make him some meatballs that we could either serve to him as finger food or break up and put in a bowl with some pureed vegetables. Like I did while cooking for ‘Make-up Mother’s Day‘ I decided to chronicle my adventures using the Whrrl application on my iphone. I’ll be posting my recipes for kids meatballs in an RMDM Kitchen feature later this week, but for now, you can check it out by clicking here.

I need to look at Whrrl again. I tried it but don't have a phone that apps and SMS is impossible with it, so I just gave up.

Figure about 15 hours for that 12 hour trip. Just sayin from a chick who used to do an 18 hour trip in about 20-21 hours due to little kids.

    Happy RTT!

Leave at 3:00am. He'll sleep most of the trip. Works really well when they're little.

The website is quite good. I find myself setting up stories on my phone and doing most of the editing on the website (mostly so I can see what I'm doing better and type faster) before I publish the it. Let me know how it goes for you.

I'd be happy with that…we're leaving as soon as my wife finishes her shift, so I'm hoping to get 6 hours of driving in that day…we shall see…happy RTT to you too.

If it were up to me we would definitely do that, but, unfortunately, I have to work the drive around my wife's work schedule. She was hoping to get the day before we needed to be there off too, but that plan went up in smoke. Oh well, great idea though. My parents always whisked us away in the middle of the night when we would go home to visit our grandparents when we were young.

Our son has never made it to the sermon happy. I have listened to all of them from my spot standing at the back of the church.

I've done that many a times. It all stopped once we started bringing snacks to church, though.

I've said it before and I'll say it again my friend… Before kids it was a vacation. After kids, it's called a family trip. Big difference…

12 hours??? you're both very brave.

The food trick doesn't work for my kid. He needs to be walking. Always. Everywhere.
