Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner

Well, I did it. I entered my very first cooking contest.
In entering the recipe that I did I also took a big risk. Even though the rules of the contest didn’t stipulate that the recipe had to be something simple or easy to prepare, I felt no matter what it was necessary for [...]

If only it could be this easy

in Fatherhood Friday

Over the past month or so we have a new routine at our house and it involves some quality time on the potty for little man. No, he is the furthest thing from being trained, or even truly started for that matter, but that he may soon have an interest is encouraging.

We have had a potty insert for the past few months and up until recently he hasn’t paid it much mind other than to pick it up and carry it around the house before bath time. A few weeks ago, however, my wife put the seat on the toilet to show him where it belongs. Almost immediately he wanted to be seated on it and we both looked at each other in amazement.

The first experience on his potty appeared to pique his curiosity and we’ve taken to sitting him on the potty seat every once in a while to get him used to the concept. We don’t necessarily think he’s ready, as he has not demonstrated any of the signs the collective ‘they’ say are necessary to begin training. Still, it has been encouraging that he’ll sit on the potty seat without much of a fuss and will even reach over and grab at the toilet paper like he’s actually done something.

Of all of the things that parents have to do for and with their children, potty training is certainly at the bottom of the list when it comes to things I’m looking forward to doing. I certainly hope that his interest in just sitting on the seat is a good sign and that things will take their course naturally.

So, until he is ready, I’ve decided to try and kill two birds with one stone.

Our new morning routine

  • Looks like we are in a similar boat, which drew me to the posting. Our daughter is 22 months lets us know when she has something in her diaper, which made us think she might be ready to start "exploring" the potty as well. She hates getting her diaper changed - squirms like hell! She likes to say "potty", flushes the toilet, and will sit briefly, like your son, but not until yesterday was there any real progress. Yesterday, my wife was changing my daughter's diaper and could tell she was ready to urinate again (how, I'm not sure - motherly intuition, I guess), so she ran her to the toilet, sat her on there and there was a little bit of urinating happening. We cheered like hell, which our doctor recommended if she were to deliver on the potty.

Like you, we are far away from potty training (in my book), but this was definitely an interesting milestone and we will try to build on it. Right now we're planning the last 2 weeks of the year, as both my wife and I will be off and can concentrate on the effort.

    Good luck to you.
  • Great pic. He looks like he has it down pat already. Next thing you know he will be walking in there with the paper under his arm ala Al Bundy.
  • Hahaha! "Hey, Dad. You got any magazines around here?"
  • That kid gets cuter every time I see him. I hope all goes like smooth sailing. Now I shall go have a good laugh at that thought.
  • That picture is too cute.

That's great that he's so curious. Our oldest girl had an unhealthy fear at first. I'm not sure where it came from, so I'm glad your little guy is ready to hop on up.

Two toilet training's down and one to go. We were lucky enough to be on holidays when our last two were ready. The weather was hot so indoors we kept them bottomless the whole time and used their 'accidents' to point out where things should go. Both times we got home with toilet trained kids. Wouldn't want to do this at home though - too many carpeted rooms.

Love the photo! It made me smile. What a cutie! So this is when men learn to turn the bathroom into a reading room!
  • Might as well get them started early, right? :)

Best of luck on the new adventures! Potty training is great, when it's over!
  • Ha! We haven't even started yet and I'm looking forward to it being over :)

    Love the picture!

I'm going to keep my mouth shut on the topic of potty training boys.

  • Uh oh, you aren't inspiring any confidence in me whatsoever!
  • Good Luck! I mean it. GOOD LUCK! I'm knocking on wood for you right now! If you ever need to vent the potty training blues- I'm here and been there, done that. I didn't look forward to it- but went in with a can-do attitude. And now I am here- at the stage that we are at, whatever it is. And when somebody asks me if our daughter is potty trained- I say "I don't know." in an exasperated tone. Because- we are just at "that" phase of it all.
  • I love it, 'the stage that we are at, whatever that is'...I know it isn't going to be fun or easy, I'd just like to get going with it soon. I figure the longer I have to over think it, the worse off I'll be.

I wonder if you'll have the same experience I did. There is something incredibly convenient about diapers, especially when your out and about. Once they're potty trained your always scrambling around looking for presentable toilets. And changing a diaper is way better than having to make an emergency pit stop on the side of a busy road and pee on a sidewalk. I think I took me 6 months to decide that potty training was an improvement over diapers.

My daughter learned from a friend who was slightly older. Elly had skipped the potty seat entirely and had learned to put her hands on either side if the toilet seat and hold herself up over the hole. One time she asked Josephine, "Do you want to watch? Well, get around back so you can see." From that day on my daughter was potty trained. It can be that easy . . . But probably won't.
  • I agree, diapers are incredibly convenient. And now that we've finally gotten out act together and started using the off brands, they aren't that expensive. I'll probably be in the same frame of mind that you were.
  • Too, Too Funny! Kudos!
  • Thanks, got to train them early, right?
