Implementing a Toddler Defense

in Captain's Chair, Fatherhood Friday

Oh yeah, he's ready for some footballWith football season here I thought it would also be a good opportunity to brush up on some toddler defensive schemes and the keys to their implementation.

Some of these defenses are designed for close quarters containment of a single toddler, while others are more suitable for coverage in more open environments involving any number of toddlers.

Man-to-Toddler

Arguably the most challenging of all the potential defensive alignments, it requires fast reflexes and dogged determination. Your coverage responsibilities are fixed in a man-to-toddler alignment and you have no safety support. This defense should only be employed when you have limited personnel resources in relation to the number of toddlers.

Zone

The primary alternative to the man-to-toddler coverage scheme is zone coverage. This defense is best employed when you have willing support from grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends or even an unsuspecting family pet. In zone you have less specific coverage responsibilities other than to ensure nothing happens in your assigned area.

Toddler Two

With coverage responsibilities similar to zone, the toddler two is a simpler scheme that requires attitude and tremendous team speed to avoid any coverage breakdowns. The toddler two should only be relied upon with personnel capable of redirecting the toddler. Toddler two personnel is generally undersized for prototypical defensive schemes, but makes up for those shortfalls with speed and agility. Older siblings or cousins are ideal in the toddler two scheme.

Nickel and Dime Packages

Other optimal defensive alignments for child containment include the nickle and dime packages, assuming you have additional personnel to fulfill the necessary roles in coverage. It should be noted that this defense is best when trying to defend larger fields of play or multiple toddlers.

Three-Four, Four-Three and The 46

These defensive formations are primarily employed in close quarters with a limited number of toddlers. Under these schemes your personnel is brought closer to the line to prevent the run. The disadvantage to these schemes is when there is a break down in run support, which leaves you short in coverage as the field of play expands.

Keys to Success

Fatherhood Friday @ Dad-Blogs.comOne of the true keys to winning against the strong minded toddler is to remain flexible with your game plan and allow for multiple formations.

While it can be tempting to stick with a favored base defensive alignment, the opposition’s willpower and ability to out scheme you should not be underestimated. The most important aspect of implementing any one of these defenses is to fully assess the skills of your personnel.

my problem is that the kids are experts at running the triple option, which I never see coming, and it ends up going for big yardage.

As long as there are more parents than kids you can play the zone. With equal kids and parents then you can play them man. The real problem is when the kids out number the parents. What do you do then?

I'm good up to the point, they field all 5 of mine on the field at WR and they run a fly pattern. Coverage breaks down and it's all over. Plus I have bad knees. I may need to do some maneuvering before the next draft to make some room in my salary cap.

    Good stuff my man.

I can't wait to see how the season goes. Especially with the nickel and dime bags.

Clever! But my favorite tactic is to just call a time-out.

What about the defense when all others fail? Otherwise known as “goal line” defense? I employ that one a lot!

I've tried employing many of these, but most fail because I think my daughter is actually playing baseball instead.

LOL. Most day's I feel like the Rams Defense from yesterday.

Yikes, plus you have to gameplan for that new wildcat formation. Those kids can be tricky.

You definitely have to try to play nickel or dime when they flood the zone like that. It is difficult for sure.

    Two words: Chop Block. :)

Ha! It will be interesting. We played a soft zone defense at the wedding we were at this weekend. Unfortunately coverage broke down because of grandparents.

For some reason mine seems to totally ignore officiating. :)

    Hopefully she doesn't have a bat :)

Confused, overwhelmed and failed to realize the games now count? :)

That was a pretty pathetic showing by the Rams, then again, my boys didn't do a whole lot on D last night to inspire any confidence for this season.

The last line of defense is always the most difficult. We were in zone coverage all weekend, but occasionally got stuck in Toddler Two when our only support over the top were nimble younger cousins. I'm worn out and need a vacation.

We use the zone coverage any chance we can get! My only fault is that I sometimes I get too relaxed when we take zones and the toddler enters my zone without my knowledge. Ah! -Jason

All this talk of toddler defense makes me tired. So glad I'm way past that stage. However, at family gatherings, I usually grab the toddler and pass him/her off to the parents. Then I smile and go have a drink.
This was a very clever post.

Sounds like you need to add some personnel and adopt the nickel package :)

Our defenses failed us miserably at the wedding we just attended. I can't wait for Saturday so I can catch up on sleep.
