There is way too much going on in my gray matter this week, as I’ve been preoccupied with some business stuff trying to make our product launch go smoothly. So, I have just a couple of quick things for today’s post.

Redesign, Redux

Hopefully you’ve noticed that I’ve completed the second stage of the site redesign complete with a logo and header. I’m very excited about this development, as it was a lot of fun for me to tinker around with code to get the old blog where it is today. However, since I have absolutely no creative bone in my body I had to call in reinforcements.

On the recommendation of a friend I opened up a design competition on crowdSPRING.com. I absolutely love crowdsourcing as a business model, so I was eager to give it a go. Two weeks ago I offered up some prize money and waited for the design concepts to roll in. My project details were admittedly short on guidance due to that whole lack of a creative bone thing I mentioned, which got me a little discouraged after the first few concept submissions fell flat with me.

Finally, with about two days left to go in the contest I received the winning entry. I knew almost immediately that nothing else was going to beat it. The logo was the first thing submitted and I loved its clean look and simplicity. When I asked the creative to provide me with an example of a header using the logo the contest might as well have been over. In any event, the process was great and I love the result. I hope you all do too.

Going to Press

I’ve been thinking about ways to celebrate my first blogaversary, which isn’t until November 18th. You’re probably wondering why I’m worrying about it now, more than three months away, but that is just my planner nature.

I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but I’ve been writing a guest post series over at Building Camelot called ‘How to Cook the Meal and Keep the Girl‘. When Tyler opened his blog up to guest writers for the summer I thought a series about some of the culinary things I do for my wife would fit with the marriage and relationship aspect of his blog. Working on this guest post series has rekindled my desire to write a cookbook. It is something I’ve thought about and toyed around with ever since I started experimenting in the kitchen.

Therefore, I’ve decided to write and release a free eBook on my one year blogaversary to be titled ‘In the RMDM Kitchen’. I’ll be relying on many of the RMDM Kitchen posts here on the blog, as well as a few other things I haven’t posted here before. Namely, my super secret BBQ sauce and Ultimate BBQ rub recipes.

I’m currently piecing together the contents of the eBook using fastpencil and, now that I’ve put the idea out there, I know the pressure will be on me to actually do what I’m planning. If you’re interested in the eBook, then I hope you will consider becoming a fan of RMDM on Facebook where I will be shamelessly self promoting its launch.

Under the Microscope

As if burning the candle at both ends wasn’t enough, I’m now creating new ends so I can light those too.  On Tuesday night I got word that I was chosen to be the Charlotte Fatherhood Examiner over at Examiner.com.  I don’t know what the addition of this gig means for my blog in terms of keeping up with all the different memes I’m involved with, but Fatherhood Friday is very important to me and I appreciate each and every one of you that come by to read my ramblings, even if I can be lax in responding to your comments.

That is all from my neck of the blogiverse. I wish you all a Happy Fatherhood Friday and look forward to reading your posts!

No wonder you have to plan – releasing a book! Early congrats!

Where do you find time for it all?!?

DCUrbanDad July 31, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Congrats dude! Also the design rocks. I am thinking I need a revamp, but I just need to find the time.

You never sleep, right? I just don't get how you find time in a 24 hours to do all you get done. I'm very interested in your cook book . . . for the cooks in my family.
I'm liking your blog redo.

Thank you, I need the pressure to actually get it done…

Unfortunately my workaholic nature has bled into my blogging life, that and I only have one kid. If #2 were to come along I'd definitely have to scale things back.

PJ Mullen July 31, 2009 at 8:38 pm

Thanks man, I took me forever to commit to doing it, but I'm glad I finally pulled the trigger.

I'm a night owl by nature, so I would stay up all night doing this stuff if I could. I got into blogging for two reasons. To connect with dads and moms online to understand this whole parenting thing and to develop some new skills for my ultimate re-entry into the job market. I really, really do not want to have to go back into finance. And after my comment about being in favor of the public execution of Wall Street executives, I might not be welcome. :)

That all some pretty cool stuff that you have going on. You sure have a nack for networking. Also, I do like the redesign as well. Very creative way about getting a new design, even if you don't feel like you have a creative bone in you. I too have been thinking about a redesign, and if you have any suggestions feel free to share. As of now, it is what it is. -Jason

Thanks man, I appreciate that. If I hadn't stumbled upon Dad-Blogs I think I'd have three readers, two of which would be my wife and mother :) I really like the flexibility of the Thesis theme, not sure if you've ever checked that out. I've learned a bit about CSS and PHP from doing all of this. It has a lot of SEO features that I haven't even begun to explore. Now that the design is set I need to work on that stuff. For the money, a single site license was $87, it was a good fit for me. If you were looking to do something more custom, there are other options I'd be happy to point you to when you are ready.

Looks good. And congrats on the new gig.

I have been chosen the Mrs. LIAYF examiner here at the house. Pay is not great, but the dividends are suh-weet.

Wow you have a lot going on at once! I love the new header and can't wait for the cookbook. Good luck with product launch.

PJ Mullen August 1, 2009 at 9:13 am

Thank you. I just submitted my license renewal application for the Mrs. RMDM examiner position. Looks like those jobs have the same compensation plan :)

Thank you! I definitely need my head examined. I guess there is no cure for workaholism. :)

Digging the new look. I wish I had the time to devote to sprucing up my blog. Of course, that would involve moving nearly two years of content to a dedicated domain. Someday . . .

Thanks man. Yikes, I definitely don't envy you on that, although I think Wordpress has a fairly straightforward import function from the self hosted install. I use Simple Scripts thru my host to update and manage my Wordpress install, which made migration pretty easy.

Thanks so much, as always, for your very kind comments. Loving the new design!

Looking forward to it. I can't wait to learn how to make your BBQ sauce. I'm a bit of a gourmet myself and will be posting the recipe to one of my signature dishes. It will be released on Friday. I hope you'll try it out and let me know what you think because I've never shared my recipes before.

Very nice, look forward to checking it out. Originally I was hesitant to talk too much about cooking on here, but that is part of who I am. Whether it is something I make for my wife and me or something I make for little man it all fits somehow.
