My kid has expensive taste

Fried squid from Hong Kong

This past Sunday night we went out to dinner to celebrate my mother’s birthday. She didn’t want anything special despite it being a milestone birthday, so my brother and I put together a simple night out with just a few close family members.

Ordinarily whenever we go out to eat getting little man to consume anything of consequence is usually quite difficult, which is one reason why we don’t go out to eat too often. However, on this particular occasion he was very curious about the different things that were appearing on our table, specifically our calamari appetizer.

Much to our surprise our son began eating the little fried rings of squid in earnest and became very vocal gesturing for more when he had eaten his allotment. I can’t get this kid to eat chicken, but he’ll gobble down calamari like it’s his occupation. Yeah, I’m screwed.

He also had fun playing with them, even putting them on his pinkie fingers. I did, however, become concerned when he turned to me and told me that one day he may call upon me for a small favor.

My wife is officially 23 weeks pregnant today and the baby has become quite active to the point where I can feel the kicking at night. While this is our second child and there won’t be any showers or gifts, we did take the time to set up a registry – for the coupons of course.

Plus, you can’t beat getting 15% off anything on your registry that wasn’t purchased for you when the baby comes, assuming I don’t buy it off Amazon first. Free shipping is my bestest friend.

I’m wrapping this one up with a little self promotion. I have been fortunate enough to come across some social media consulting work lately, which has been nice. While I’m by no means claiming guru, or even expert status, I have managed to set up a blog and a campaign for my client Sweatshirt Blanket.

And, no, they’re aren’t snuggie knockoffs if that’s what you are thinking.

Our first blogger review and giveaway went live yesterday over at The Experimental Mommy. If you have an interest check it the link for more details as two winners will be selected from all entries received before 11:59 CST on March 15th.

The boy has GREAT taste. I would be tempted to tell my daughter that it's cut up Squidward.

Wow! You got your child to eat calamari? Mine still won't touch it. And they're a lot older.
Isn't it wonderful to feel your child kicking? I wish I would have thought of the registry/coupon thing when I was expecting my second child. No imagination, I guess.
Congrats to you on the social media consulting gig! Yes, I'm going to click on the link. Umm…which one is it? :)

I agree, just surprised that squid is little man's protein of choice :)

No doubt, the next thing you know he's going to be asking for filet mignon and osso bucco

Shocked the heck out of me that he ate them. I told him they were Italian onion rings :)

I have no idea how that happened. Totally random, probably will hate it the next time. The coupon thing was totally my wife's idea. We just happened to be at Babies R Us getting a shower gift.

    Happy Birthday to your Mom.
And I've noticed that kids will eat anything as long as it's breaded and deep fried. Fun story and I'll head to your new site next.

Calamari eating kids rock! I have a picky eater who won't eat sandwiches of any kind, but loves sushi and fine steaks. Get into them whatever good foods you can.

    Calamari? Blech. (sorry)

Social Media consulting? Wow, that's pretty cool. Well, us daddy bloggers are learning a lot every day and some of us have really kicked in the marketing recently (I'm a little slow on the uptake there). So, that's cool. Good job!

Your kid and I must share similar tastes. I love calimari, but sadly I can't afford it these days. Thankfully my boys haven't experienced it yet else I might be in trouble. :-)

Calimari is such a tricky thing. I absolutely love it when done right. Cheap imitations are terrible. Either way your kid eating it is pretty surprising.

Thanks, man. I only wish that were the case with my son, who knows, maybe this opened a new world for him. I'm just hoping his next request isn't kobe beef :)

That's pretty funny, but tough on the grocery budget. Yesterday I reheated the parmesan truffle fries I had left over from dinner at the Capital Grille and, of course, he ate more than half of them on me. I may need to get a job just to afford my future food critic.

What, you don't like Italian onion rings? We told my uncle that's what they were to trick him into eating them years ago. He was telling an Italian co-worker about them a few years later and was not happy with us when he learned they were squid. Yeah, we're evil. :)

Thanks. I feel very fortunate to do something that I enjoy finally. I still have plenty to learn.

That so came out of left field for him. I'm in real trouble if his tastes continue develop like this.

I'm totally with you. One of my favorites was this place near where I used to live in Boston. They tossed rings of jalapeno peppers in with the calamari to give it a little bit of kick without being overwhelming. But I've also had so many bad attempts that I get leery.

Maybe I get get your son to influence my children's palates. They only want to eat chicken nuggets and hamburgers.

  • http://www.pjmullen.com/ PJ Mullen

Sure, then your kids can get my son to eat a hamburger. I'm nervous about what his next favorite thing is going to be. Next week he might ask for tournedos.

  • johncaveosborne

is it possible to blame it on TV–sponge bob square pants and that enticing sidekick of his, squidward?

  • http://blog.benwakeling.co.uk/ Ben Wakeling

Hahaha! He'll be on the caviar next!

  • http://www.pjmullen.com/ PJ Mullen

I wish, unfortunately we don't watch TV (I'm getting ready to cancel my DirecTV too).

  • http://www.pjmullen.com/ PJ Mullen

No doubt, if his next word is Beluga, I'm screwed.

  • seattledad

Yes, Calamari is excellent. Next you can start feeding him deep fried Lobster tail.

  • http://www.pjmullen.com/ PJ Mullen

LOL. No thanks, I'm going to have a second kid to feed in a couple of months.
