Recently I and a number of my dad blogger brethren were approached by RedEnvelope, the place for unique and personalized gifts, to receive a gift from their Fathers’ Day collection in exchange for a word or two about the experience.
Their offer was to choose any item with a value of $75 or less from their collection and they would send it to us for free. As I looked at everything that was available I had a hard time picking out just one thing. When I did the suit and tie thing for a living I was a cufflink freak and they had some cool ones that I seriously considered requesting even though I have absolutely no use for them these days.
Naturally, I ended up gravitating towards the barbecue and cooking tools that they had available, which I know comes as no shock to any of my regular readers. Ultimately, I chose the wireless talking barbecue and oven thermometer.
I let RedEnvelope know what gift I would like on Wednesday morning and by Friday evening a very elegantly presented package had arrived on my doorstep, just in time for me to put dinner together.
Knowing that my new gadget was en route and not trusting the wet weather we’ve been having here in Charlotte this past week, I planned on putting it through it paces in the oven rather than the grill by making a Herb and Horseradish Crusted Rib Eye Roast for dinner.
In my experience, one of the big issues with probe style thermometers are their accuracy. More than once I’ve tossed one of these things straight into the garbage because they contributed to me undercooking or overcooking my food. When you drop $10/pound on a roast for a special occasion nothing is more disappointing than when you make that first cut and find out your meat is well beyond medium rare.
I am very happy to report that the first run of the wireless talking barbecue and oven thermometer was a success. It was very easy to use and kindly informed me that my roast was nearly done when the internal temperature was 5 degrees away from the medium rare setting. At 145 degrees it let me know that dinner was ready.
After giving the roast some time to rest I made the first cut and was very pleased to find a healthy pink center in the middle.
This, however, is not my first experience with RedEnvelope. I actually purchased a keepsake box for my wife as a baby shower gift when she was pregnant with our son. When it arrived it had been damaged in shipment and after contacting RedEnvelope customer service they worked quickly to remedy the situation.
A new keepsake box arrived well in advance of the shower and my wife loved it. I will definitely be investigating options at RedEnvelope for my wife as we prepare to welcome our daughter into the world at the end of the month.

Two meat related posts in a row. My colon aches.
I don't even know what red envelope is. But, that meat thermometer looks a lot nicer than my Brookstone fork/thermometer. They haven't found me yet, either that or I spammed them by accident
HA! After winning a year's worth of chicken I needed a break.
They found a lot of us, hopefully you didn't spam block them
It is a pretty sweet gadget.
I have a good thermometer that I use mostly for pork tenderloins. Nothing worse than some really dry pork. Yours is cooler though not only because it talks, but it has a picture of a cow on it too. Good stuff.
Hey PJ – some people call me BJ so I like your nickname. I'm a BBQ man myself!
Yep, Father's Day is coming up. Another year without my dad who I miss terribly. He was 90 when he died – four years ago. And, he was a REAL MAN though he didn't drive a minivan. I'll be having a special Father's Day Tribute show on my radio show and will be reading tributes from YOUR dad if you want to send them in – to me at bruce@brucesallan.com.
I'll never forget the first talking calculator I saw. I guess I should figured talking thermometers would be around the corner.
I'm waiting for a thermometer that will flip my steaks so I can enjoy my beer
that's something i would have chosen, too. i'm on a quest for the perfect meat thermometer b/c most of them suck so back. go tell them you just got them a sale!
This one has a really nice solid probe, whereas most I’ve used are not. I’ve used it twice and both times my protein came out perfectly cooked. Who knows if that will continue to be the case, but at first pass it works well. Maybe they’ll cut me a royalty check if you pick one up. With baby girl due any day now I could use the extra $.48
