The fun we had in the pumpkin patch

Fun in the pumpkin patchLast Thursday my wife had the day off from work, so we set out to have some fall family fun. While it hasn’t cooled off all that much here in Charlotte, we thought it was about time to go find little man a pumpkin. After nap time was over we set off to grab a nice lunch and attempt to get a complete meal into him before beginning our little adventure.

Arriving at a local farm filled with pumpkins it was pretty clear that we were more excited than he was at the beginning. I set him down amongst the bigger pumpkins and he was at first quite tentative, feeling out his new environment.

Not too much later, however, he was swiftly navigating his way through the pumpkin patch, touching everything in sight. Since these fine specimens weighed about as much as he does, I did what I could to steer him towards a much bigger patch of small pumpkins that would be more his speed. It took a little effort to get him past the puppies that inhabited the farm, but eventually he relented and sped ahead of us.

At the entrance to the grouping of smaller pumpkins was a maze made out of baled hay stacked two high. He motored right through the it and made it nearly all the way through before turning around and high tailing it back to where he had entered. We played around in the maze for a few more minutes until something else caught his attention.

Racing out towards the vast array of small pumpkins, we were pretty sure one of the little pumpkins had caught his eye. Watching as he stumbled through the piles of pumpkins, we anxiously awaited him finding the one that was just right for him.

Much to our dismay he raced past all of the pumpkins and kept going right towards another bright orange object that happened to be sitting in the adjacent field: a construction traffic cone.

Hee hee: great story! Pumpkin patches and children are great fun when you put them together.

Now: are you going to carve eyes, nose and mouth out of a construction cone? That would be awesome.

(and yay: I'm finally caught up on my reader! Woot!)

I may have my deer hunting, but I wish my small town life had more pumpking patches and corn mazes and such. You would think in the country we would have pumpkins and corn. On second thought maybe we do and I just don't know about it. Nice post. Great pics of the little man.

It can be a pumpkin and a witches hat all in one. I like the way he thinks.

Classic! We just had our preschool pumpkin patch field trip today. We saw all kind of cool animals (including one-day old piglets). The next time we're in class together I'll ask them to name their favorite things about the excursion. I guarantee most of them will say something like, “the snack,” or “seeing the horse poop.” When we take a bus on our field trips, no matter where we go, the bus ride is always the highlight.

I feel I should point out here, despite the fervor of everyone in the comments, defacing a municipal traffic cone is at best illegal and at worst a waste of taxpayer money.

Meh – do it anyway. :)

Hmmm…I may need to make a clandestine visit back to that farm :)

I just may have to do that and put it out on the front step come Halloween night.

Really? I thought there would be lots of farms doing that kind of stuff out near you, not to be so presumptive, since there are obviously difference in what people farm in different areas. Happy hunting!

Wow, I totally missed that, he is quite the forward thinker.

They have plenty of them just sitting on the side of the road along the various unfinished road construction projects around Charlotte. Besides, I'm sure the contractors managing the projects have plenty of 'contigent' line items in their proposals. Look for the pics soon :)

It is always interesting to see what kids pick up on. We were totally expecting him to pick one up, look at us and run off with it like he stole it. Were we ever wrong. Sounds like a fun trip, weather permitted we're going to take him to another farm that is slightly north of where we live to do some apple picking and check out their animals. I'll have to remember to bring my flip when we do go.
