The Scoop on ‘Not now Papa, I’m on a call’

London Calling

Not a day goes by that little man doesn’t do something that cracks me up. As an example, everything these days is a phone. He especially loves it when he can get a hold of our home phone because it makes lots of booping and beeping noises. It seems that any toy he has in his hand these days will become a phone to him, as he nods in agreement with the imaginary caller.

On the rare occasion he’ll even just hold his hand to his ear and walk around the living room spouting off jibberish. But the funniest thing I’ve seen yet was when he took this little hand puppet story book thing, opened the book part of it and pretended that was a phone. I just happened to be on a call when he did that, so I wasn’t able to snap a picture of it.

This is just one of the many examples he provides daily that he is a silly, slobbering little sponge. As he’s grown he’s obviously seen us on the phone, but is now starting to imitate our behaviors. Because of this I’m even more thankful that I’m out of the corporate world, as I’ve broken a few phones in my day.

Since my wife’s parents live a few states away, we’ve always held our phones to his ear so his Oma and Opa can say hello. It’s kind of a fruitless venture in that he isn’t going to respond aside from the occasional giggle. Still, they enjoy it and obviously he has been paying attention. I guess we will soon see if he has learned proper phone etiquette.

What is it with phones that attract little ones? My godson loves to play with old cell phones. I find it funny that your little guy turns anything into a phone. Creativity wheels are in full spin. :)

My sister got my three year old a princess wand from the dollar tree. She told me it was a phone. I said no it isn't and she got mad at me. She will walk around with it and say “Hi, I can't play right now. Bye, See you later!” It is so funny!

That was really funny, my daughter does the same! :-)

I'm happy I found this blog, I'm always looking for Dad bloggers!

You have got quite the cute creative kid! Our daughter loved her made up phones too. It won't be long before they are wanting the real thing. -Jason

Your little man and mine should get together on a call some time. Isn't it funny how they like to mimic the actions we do. Our 2 year old has been into phones since he could crawl. Now he actually has pretend phone calls.

We have done the same thing with holding the phone up to his ears so his family can talk to him. Now he can hold a conversation with them and he always loves listening to their voices. This is a great way to keep the loved ones we can't see that often fresh in their minds.

Keep enjoying all of the little things.

Absolutely, I think it is pretty cool. It is really interesting to see how their minds work.

No doubt, I just need to train him to order me a pizza while I'm watching the game :)

That is pretty funny. As a precaution, I've stripped out all the predials on our home phone because it is inevitable that he'll figure out the right sequence of keys to press.

Our little man just smiles right now whenever he hears their voices, or calls them 'kitty', but everything is kitty. You're right, it is important to make sure those connections stay there. We only get to see my wife's family every few months or so.
