The Ford Maverick and Toyota Sienna were both honored today for their blend of design, âthoughtfulâ features and, most importantly, for their green drivetrain technologies.
Ford’s compact pickup was named Green Truck of the Year, while Toyota’s Van was named Green Family Car of the Year, closing this year’s Green Car Awards at a ceremony in San Antonio , in Texas.
Six other products were honored a week ago, including the Audi Q4 which was named Green Car of the Year.
âThe Ford Maverick is a flagship vehicle offering truck enthusiasts an affordable choice that is highly fuel efficient, functional and the right size for everyday use,â said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal and GreenCarJournal.com. âThe Toyota Sienna is ideal for families by combining sophisticated design, hybrid efficiency and a range of features well thought out for families in an attractive minivan shape. “
The last two
The Maverick is one of two new models, along with the Hyundai Santa Cruz, bringing back the once popular compact pickup segment. It targets young buyers who want a vehicle that is both functional and affordable. Ford appeals to DIY enthusiasts and even incorporates QR codes into Maverick. Owners can call for guides showing how to build a bike rack or 3D printing storage bins for the truck.
Maverick will be offered with two different transmissions, starting with a 2.0-liter Ecoboost engine, mated to an 8-speed automatic. This package produces 250 horsepower with a torque rated at 277 pound-feet. The turbo-4 group can be ordered in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
But the Green Truck award focuses on the alternative package, a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle gasoline engine with a 94-kilowatt electric motor. Together, they produce a maximum power of 191 horsepower and a torque of 151 pound-feet. It can tow up to 2,000 pounds and provides up to 40 mpg in the EPA combined cycle.
Toyota made an unusual decision by switching to a hybrid-only drivetrain strategy for the latest generation Sienna minivan. It uses a 2.5-liter gasoline engine paired with two electric motors, producing 243 horsepower. The system is designed to deliver up to 36 mpg.
The new van offers a wide range of family-friendly features and, for 2022, adds a new Woodlands package that comes standard with all-wheel drive, tow hitch and roof rack and a 1,500-watt electrical outlet. 120 volts.
The Maverick and Sienna compete in segments where buyers now find a growing range of models with green transmissions. On the truck side, for example, there are new all-electric models like the GMC Hummer EV and the Rivian R1T. On the wagon side, buyers have options like the all-electric Volkswagen ID.4 and the Chrysler Pacifica hybrid.
