The 2021 Toyota Sienna was one of two vehicles to receive TSP+, the nonprofit’s highest safety accolade.
The redesigned minivan, available exclusively as a hybrid, stepped up its game and improved on last year’s ‘acceptable’ rating in the driver’s side small overlap test; and rated “marginal” in the passenger side test to “good” in both categories this year.

The IIHS has a whole vehicle checklist for its TSP+ awards. It is awarded only to vehicles that receive “good” ratings in the two aforementioned tests, as well as the head restraint, roof strength, and moderate front and side overlap tests. Vehicles must also receive an “advanced” or “superior” rating for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian frontal collision prevention, and must achieve “acceptable” or “good” ratings for headlights of all versions.
The only other vehicle to garner these criteria for 2020 was the 2021 Acura TLX, which improved its crash ratings from “acceptable” to “good” in several tests.

A step back from the TSP+ honor is the Top Safety Pick (TSP), which is awarded to vehicles that all have the same qualifications of the TSP+, except only for “good” or “acceptable” headlights on at minus one garnish but not all.
Audi’s mid-size cars, the 2021 A4 and A5, both received TSP awards thanks to the respective “good” and “acceptable” headlights of the Prestige and Premium Plus versions. Guess we’ll find out what they’re updating for next year, huh?
